How much cooling does a server room need?
Almost all the electrical power your kit draws turns into heat, so a rack pulling 3 kW of electricity needs roughly 3 kW of cooling — then you add heat from the UPS, lighting and anyone working in the room, plus headroom for growth and redundancy. Why N+1 redundancy is the point
A server room runs its cooling 24/7, so a single unit is a single point of failure — if it trips or needs servicing, temperatures climb fast and kit throttles or shuts down. N+1 redundancy means installing more cooling than you strictly need (N) plus one spare (+1), so full cooling continues through a failure or a service visit.
- Lead/lag control — a controller alternates which unit is the duty unit to even out wear, and automatically brings the standby unit online if the lead fails or the room gets too warm.
- No downtime for servicing — with two units, an engineer can isolate and service one while the other keeps the room cool.

F-Gas, servicing and keeping cover valid
Only F-Gas certified engineers may legally install or work on refrigerant systems, and refrigerant must never be vented to the atmosphere — it's both illegal and a common cause of failed insurance claims. Server room systems should be on a planned maintenance schedule, typically two visits a year covering F-Gas leak checks, filter and coil cleaning, condensate checks and a test of the changeover and alarms; regular servicing also keeps many equipment warranties and business-continuity cover valid.
