What usually goes wrong

One thing to check first: some manufacturers offer extended warranties of five years or more when a system is fitted by one of their accredited installers, and those terms can require repairs to go through the same route. At home, most repairs are on single wall-mounted splits in bedrooms, home offices and loft rooms, with larger properties running multi-split or ducted systems. A fault on a multi-split can knock out several rooms at once, so it's worth mentioning how many indoor units you have.
For businesses the stakes are different. An office, shop or server room can't wait long, and the systems are larger. Many firms put a maintenance contract in place so breakdowns are caught early. Five checks that sometimes save a call-out
- Check the remote is on the right mode (cool, not fan or dry) and the set temperature is below the room temperature.
- Take out and rinse the indoor filters. A blocked filter is the most common cause of weak cooling.
- Look at the outdoor unit: clear leaves, garden furniture or anything pressed against it.
- Check the fuse board. If the air conditioning circuit has tripped more than once, leave it off and book an engineer.
- Write down any error code and take a photo of the indoor unit's label before you fill in the form.

When a repair isn't worth it
A good engineer will tell you plainly when fixing a unit no longer makes sense. The usual signs are a system well past ten years old, a compressor failure, repeated leaks, or a refrigerant that has become expensive to buy. At that point the repair bill starts to approach the cost of replacement, and a new unit will run more efficiently too.
On refrigerant, the rules are simple. Gas only escapes through a leak, so the leak has to be found and fixed before a re-gas. Topping up a leaking system just wastes money, releasing refrigerant on purpose is illegal, and anyone who handles it must hold F-Gas certification.
