Why glass makes a showroom pricey to cool
Floor area barely tells half the story. What really sets the number is how much heat pours in through the glazing, and how far the cool air has to travel to reach anyone.
Take a car showroom with a full-height glazed frontage facing the road. On a clear day that glass behaves like a greenhouse, and south or west-facing glazing is the worst of the lot — the solar gain alone can outweigh every other heat source in the room. An installer sizes the kit for that peak, not for an overcast afternoon, so a glassy showroom needs noticeably more cooling capacity per square metre than a boxy office of the same footprint.
Height is the other half of it. Showrooms often run to four or five metres at the ceiling, and warm air being what it is, it drifts up there and sits well above head height. Cooling that volume takes bigger units, and getting them to throw air down to floor level sometimes calls for high-throw cassettes or a spot of destratification so the cold doesn't just circulate around the light fittings. The usual answer is ducted or ceiling-recessed cassette units: the working parts tuck into the ceiling void and all you see is a slim grille. A showroom system will usually push the building past 12kW of cooling, which brings TM44 into play: a five-yearly energy inspection carried out by an accredited assessor, and a legal duty for whoever operates the building. It sits apart from your servicing and your F-Gas work.
