Air Conditioning Grants, 0% VAT & Finance UK
There is a lot of loose talk online about "free air con grants" and "0% VAT air conditioning". The honest 2026 position is narrower: the £7,500 heat pump grant does not apply to normal split air conditioning, the VAT relief depends on what exactly is installed, and most people who spread the cost use installer finance. Here is what is real, what is conditional, and what to check.
Is there a grant for air conditioning in the UK?
For a typical home fitting split air conditioning for summer cooling: no, there is no general-purpose grant. The Boiler Upgrade Scheme, ECO4 and the Warm Homes Plan fund heating and insulation, not comfort cooling. There are two narrow exceptions and a VAT relief that may or may not apply.
| Scheme | What it funds | Standard split air con? |
|---|---|---|
| Boiler Upgrade Scheme — £7,500 | Air-to-water and ground source heat pumps replacing fossil-fuel heating | No — air-to-air is not eligible for the £7,500 |
| Boiler Upgrade Scheme — £2,500 air-to-air route | Air-to-air heat pumps replacing direct electric heating, via an MCS-certified installer | Rarely — most comfort-cooling installs in gas-heated homes do not qualify |
| Disabled Facilities Grant | Council-assessed adaptations for a disabled person to live at home | Sometimes — where cooling is a documented medical need |
| ECO4 / Great British Insulation Scheme / Warm Homes Plan | Insulation and heating for low-income or low-EPC homes | No — cooling is not a funded measure |
| 0% VAT on energy-saving materials | Installation of listed materials, including fixed air source heat pumps, to 31 March 2027 | Depends on the facts — see below |
Position as we understand it in August 2026. Rules change — confirm current eligibility with Ofgem, your council or HMRC before relying on any saving.
Air-to-air vs air-to-water: why the £7,500 does not apply
A wall-mounted split is technically an air-to-air heat pump: it moves heat between outdoor and indoor air, cooling in summer and heating in winter. The £7,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant is for air-to-water heat pumps — the outdoor box that feeds radiators and a hot-water cylinder in place of a boiler. Air-to-air systems have never been eligible for that £7,500; an installer who implies otherwise is confused or selling hard.
The £2,500 air-to-air route. Government announced, and from 28 April 2026 legislated for, a separate £2,500 grant for air-to-air heat pumps under the scheme in England and Wales. As we understand it, it is ring-fenced for homes replacing direct electric heating (storage heaters, panel radiators, electric underfloor), is one grant per property rather than per indoor unit, must be claimed by an MCS-certified installer, and needs a product listed on the MCS directory — which has limited early uptake. If you heat with gas, oil or LPG and want cooling for a couple of bedrooms, assume you will not qualify. If you really are replacing electric heaters with a multi-room system, ask whether the installer is MCS-certified and check current Ofgem guidance before budgeting for it.
Either way, a split's heating mode is worth having on its merits — see our running costs guide and air conditioning vs heat pump.
"0% VAT air conditioning" — what the relief actually covers
Since April 2022 the UK has applied a temporary 0% VAT rate to the installation of listed energy-saving materials in residential property, running to 31 March 2027 (after which 5% is expected to return unless extended). Air source heat pumps are on the list. HMRC's guidance accepts that most modern air conditioning units are, in engineering terms, air source heat pumps — but adds that in cases of doubt, whether a product qualifies depends on the facts. That sentence is why you see both "0% VAT air con" adverts and accountants arguing about it.
What seems clear: the relief covers supply and installation together by the installer, in a residential property, of equipment that is permanently fixed and works as a heat pump. Cooling-only units, portable units, equipment bought separately and commercial premises do not benefit. The typical reversible domestic split sits between those poles: many installers apply the zero rate, others charge 20% to be safe. Do not pick an installer because they say "0% VAT" — the VAT treatment is their liability, not yours. Ask every quote to show the VAT rate and its basis, compare the total, and for certainty see HMRC VAT Notice 708/6.
Disabled Facilities Grant: cooling as a health requirement
Councils in England, Wales and Northern Ireland administer the Disabled Facilities Grant for adaptations that let a disabled person live safely at home. It is means-tested for adults and assessed by the council's occupational therapy team as "necessary and appropriate". Cooling is not a standard item, but it has been funded where a clinician confirms heat intolerance is part of a condition — some neurological, cardiac and respiratory conditions and some medication regimes. If that describes your household, gather supporting evidence from your GP or consultant and contact the council's housing adaptations team before getting quotes; they usually specify and approve the works.
Installer finance, 0% deals and buy-now-pay-later
With a single-room split at £1,500–£3,000 installed and a three-room multi-split at £4,500–£7,500, most people who do not pay outright use one of these. None is a grant; all are credit.
| Option | Typical terms | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Installer-arranged 0% finance | Interest-free over 12–24 months via a third-party lender, often with a deposit | The 0% is usually subsidised by the installer — check the cash price is not inflated to fund it; a credit check applies |
| Installer finance at representative APR | 3–10 year terms at the lender's representative APR | Total cost of credit; early-settlement terms; the agreement is with the lender, not the installer |
| Buy-now-pay-later | Short interest-free windows on supply-only or smaller jobs | Late fees and reversion rates; some BNPL sits outside full consumer-credit protection |
| Credit card (part payment) | Your own rate | Paying £100+ by card can extend Section 75 protection to the whole contract — useful if an installer ceases trading |
