Which system fits your property?
Almost every domestic and light-commercial installation uses one of four system types. The right choice depends on how many rooms you want conditioned, how the building is constructed, and how visible you want the equipment to be.
Single split
One indoor wall unit paired with one outdoor unit — the workhorse for a bedroom, lounge, loft room or home office. The most affordable route into fixed air conditioning.
Multi-split
Two to five indoor units running from a single outdoor unit, so you condition several rooms without cluttering the outside of the house. Each room keeps its own temperature control.
Ducted
The whole-house option. Air is treated centrally and distributed through concealed ducts to discreet ceiling or floor grilles — nothing on the walls. Suits new builds, major renovations and larger homes.
Ceiling cassette
A flush ceiling-mounted unit that throws air in four directions. Ideal for large open-plan kitchens and living spaces, and the default choice in offices and shops with suspended ceilings.
How an installation actually happens
A good installation is a designed piece of work, not a box hung on a wall. Expect four stages from first contact to a running system.
1. Site survey
The engineer visits to measure the rooms, check wall construction, find a sensible outdoor unit position and plan the pipe route. Room size, glazing, insulation and use all feed the kilowatt sizing — undersized units struggle, oversized ones short-cycle and dehumidify poorly.
2. Written quote
You should receive an itemised quote naming the exact indoor and outdoor models, the kW capacity, pipe run length, electrical work, condensate drainage and warranty terms. Vague one-line quotes are a warning sign.
3. Installation day
For a single split, the crew mounts the indoor unit, drills a small core hole for the pipework, fixes the outdoor unit, runs and insulates the refrigerant pipes, connects the condensate drain and wires the system to a dedicated electrical supply.
4. Commissioning and handover
The engineer pressure-tests the pipework with nitrogen, pulls a vacuum, releases the refrigerant charge, then runs the system in cooling and heating while checking temperatures and current draw. You get a demonstration of the controls, the commissioning record, and the paperwork needed to register the manufacturer warranty.
What actually affects the price
Two identical units can be hundreds of pounds apart to install on different properties. These are the variables engineers price for.
Capacity (kW)
Bigger rooms need bigger units, and stepping up a capacity class raises hardware and electrical costs alike.
Pipe run length
Back-to-back runs (outdoor unit directly behind the indoor one) are cheapest; long runs through lofts add pipework, insulation and labour.
Wall vs ceiling units
Wall-mounted indoor units are the quickest to fit. Ceiling cassettes and concealed ducted units need more labour, more access and often a condensate pump.
Access and scaffolding
Outdoor units above ground-floor level, flats, and awkward elevations can need scaffolding or towers — often the single biggest extra on a quote.

Two 2026 details are worth factoring into the budget. Most fixed installations qualify for 0% VAT until 31 March 2027 under the energy-saving materials relief — portable, cooling-only and commercial jobs are excluded — and a reputable installer applies it directly to the quote. And while air-to-air air conditioning is not eligible for the main £7,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme, a narrow £2,500 air-to-air grant route opened on 28 April 2026 for homes currently on direct electric heating that use an MCS-certified installer and product; check the latest Ofgem criteria before assuming you qualify. How to choose an installer
The installer matters at least as much as the brand on the box. Three checks separate a professional installation from an expensive problem:
F-Gas certification. Handling refrigerant is legally restricted to F-Gas certified engineers — it is not optional, and a company that cannot show certification (for example through a register such as REFCOM) should not be connecting your system. Manufacturer accreditation and warranty. The leading manufacturers back installations by their accredited installers with extended warranties — premium brands offer 5–7 year cover through accredited partners. The same unit fitted by a non-accredited installer typically carries far shorter protection, so accreditation is worth real money over the life of the system.
A proper survey and itemised quote. Be wary of firm prices quoted sight-unseen. A good engineer asks about room sizes, wall construction and outdoor unit position, and puts model numbers and scope in writing.
