How much cooling does a salon need?
A salon usually needs around 130–170 W of cooling per m² of floor area — more than a typical office or shop — because hairdryers alone can each draw 1.5–2 kW, and a row of them on a busy Saturday, plus straighteners, backwash boilers, spotlighting and a full floor of clients, adds up fast. Wall units, cassettes or VRF?
The right system depends on your floor area, ceiling type and how the salon is zoned.
- Barbers and small beauty rooms — wall-mounted splits or a compact multi-split are cost-effective; one outdoor unit can serve the styling floor and a treatment room, each on its own control.

TM44 and F-Gas: the legal duties for salons
If the air conditioning in your salon has a combined rated cooling output over 12 kW — which a couple of cassettes plus a treatment-room unit can quickly reach — a TM44 inspection by an accredited assessor is legally required at least every five years, with the report lodged on the national register. The several smaller units in a salon are added together for that threshold, so it catches more owners than they expect. The duty falls on whoever controls the plant (landlord or tenant), and non-compliance can bring enforcement action and fines from the local authority. Separately, only F-Gas certified engineers may legally install or work on refrigerant systems, and refrigerant must never be vented to the atmosphere.
