The price reflects a concealed indoor unit, a network of insulated ducting, grilles in each room and — on most systems — separate zone controls. Because refrigerant is involved, the work must be carried out by an F-Gas certified engineer, which is a legal requirement. Two ducted quotes for the same house can differ by thousands. These are the variables that matter most.
- New build vs retrofit — running ducts through open joists during a build or renovation is far cheaper than threading them into a finished, occupied house with plastered ceilings.
- Floor area and layout — longer duct runs, more grilles and awkward routing all add labour and materials. Sprawling or multi-storey layouts cost more than compact ones.

What does ducted air conditioning cost to run?
Installation is one number; running it is another. At the Ofgem price cap electricity rate of around 26p per kWh (26.11p for July–September 2026), the cost depends on how much of the house you cool and for how long, not on the fact that it is ducted.
A well-designed ducted system with zoning is efficient because you cool only the zones in use rather than the whole house.
