Where does the condenser go in a flat?

A standard split or multi-split system needs an outdoor unit somewhere on the building, linked to the indoor units by thin refrigerant pipes. In a flat, the realistic homes for it are a balcony, an external wall beside a window, or a communal flat roof — and each brings its own catch. A balcony is easiest but the unit must not blow hot air at a neighbour; an external wall above the ground floor facing a road is exactly what planning rules scrutinise; and a roof position usually means longer pipework and roof access, which lifts the price.

Ground-floor and garden-flat owners have the most freedom, upper-floor flats the least. If you are cooling more than one room, a multi-split system is the sensible choice because it feeds several indoor units from a single outdoor unit — one thing to find space for and one application to make, rather than several. The monoblock option when there is nowhere for a condenser

If planning is refused or there is genuinely no viable spot for an outdoor unit, a monoblock (single-block) air conditioner is the fallback. It houses the whole refrigeration circuit in one indoor unit and simply vents through two small holes in an external wall, so there is no separate condenser to fix to the building — which can sidestep the hardest planning and consent problems. The trade-offs are real, though: monoblocks are less efficient and a little noisier than a split, cool one room each, and still put two vent grilles on the outside wall that may themselves need consent. They are a sensible plan B, not the default.
