The outdoor unit and shared cabling are the fixed part of the bill, so each extra indoor unit adds roughly £1,200–£2,200 rather than the full price of a standalone system. Because refrigerant is involved, the work must be carried out by an F-Gas certified engineer — a legal requirement. For most UK homes a multi-split is the neat choice: one outdoor unit keeps the exterior tidy and suits properties with limited wall or garden space. Separate single splits can make sense where each room is used at very different times, or where you want each system to keep working if another develops a fault. What moves your multi-split price
Two similar-sounding jobs can be quoted hundreds of pounds apart. These are the variables that matter most on a multi-split installation.
- Number of indoor units — each extra room adds equipment and labour and is the single biggest driver of the total. The shared outdoor unit is why later rooms cost less than the first.
- Total capacity (kW) — the outdoor unit must be sized for all the rooms running together. Large, south-facing or open-plan rooms need more cooling power and a bigger condenser.
- Indoor unit style — standard wall units are cheapest; floor-standing, ceiling cassette and slim concealed units cost more but suit certain rooms better.
- Pipe run lengths and routing — linking upstairs and downstairs rooms to one outdoor unit means longer refrigerant runs, more trunking and more labour.
- Brand and range — premium names such as Daikin and Mitsubishi Electric sit at the top but bring quieter units, higher efficiency and longer warranties; strong mid-range brands keep the total down. Compare on our brands hub.

What does a multi-split cost to run?
Installation is one number; running it is another. At the Ofgem price cap electricity rate of 26.11p per kWh (July–September 2026, with the cap set at £1,663 a year for a typical dual-fuel home and a standing charge of 57.19p a day), a typical 2.5kW indoor unit costs roughly 18–23p an hour to cool. The October–December 2026 cap is due to be announced around 26 August 2026; Cornwall Insight currently forecasts a small rise to about £1,709 a year, though that remains a forecast rather than a confirmed figure. You rarely run every room at once, so real multi-split running costs are far lower than adding every unit together.
Because a multi-split uses inverter compressors, each unit throttles back once its room reaches temperature, so a realistic evening-and-overnight pattern across two or three rooms often works out at a couple of pounds a day rather than per room. The same units also heat efficiently in winter — a seasonal efficiency (SCOP) of 3.5–4+ means more than three units of heat per unit of electricity — which can offset some winter heating cost. The £7,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant still applies only to air-to-water heat pumps, but from 28 April 2026 a new, narrower route offers £2,500 towards air-to-air systems in England and Wales — limited to homes currently on direct electric heating and installed by an MCS-certified installer using an MCS-certified product, since it counts as a heating rather than a cooling measure. Most fixed air-to-air installations also currently benefit from 0% VAT until 31 March 2027, and modern units run on lower-impact R32 refrigerant as standard.
