Ice on the pipes, frost behind the filters or a puddle when it thaws — a freezing air conditioner is almost always telling you the same thing: too little airflow or too little refrigerant. Here is why it happens, what is safe to do yourself, and what the fix costs in 2026.
Why is my air conditioning freezing up?
An air conditioner ices up when the indoor coil runs colder than it should. That happens either because airflow across the coil is restricted (dirty filters, a furred-up coil or a failing fan) or because the refrigerant charge is low — and on a sealed split system, low charge always means a leak. Switch the unit off, let it thaw completely, then clean the filters. If it freezes again with clean filters, book an F-Gas certified engineer: it points to a leak or a component fault that must be diagnosed properly.
The six reasons an air conditioner freezes over
Nearly every frozen-coil call-out traces back to one of these. The first three you can often influence yourself; the last three need an engineer.
1. Dirty or clogged filters
The number-one cause. When the mesh filters clog, too little warm room air passes over the cold evaporator coil, its surface drops below freezing and condensation turns to frost. Lift the front panel, slide the filters out, wash them in lukewarm water, dry and refit. Do this every four to six weeks in the cooling season.
2. A blocked or furred-up coil
Behind the filters, the fins of the evaporator coil collect dust and grime that filters miss. A caked coil chokes airflow just as clogged filters do, so it frosts over. This needs a proper chemical clean — see our deep-clean guide — not a household spray.
3. Fan not moving enough air
If the indoor fan runs slowly, sticks, or the blower wheel is caked with dirt, the coil loses its supply of warm air and freezes even with clean filters. A failing fan motor or capacitor is a routine engineer repair.
4. Low refrigerant — which always means a leak
A low charge drops the pressure and temperature in the coil below freezing, so ice forms on the thin copper pipe and creeps back to the indoor unit. Split systems are sealed and never "use up" gas, so a low charge means it has escaped from a flare joint, corroded coil or damaged pipe. 5. Thermostat or ambient temperature too low
Running the unit on a very low set-point, or in cool mode when the room is already cold (a spare room, or a warm evening that has turned chilly), lets the coil temperature fall below freezing. Raising the set-point a couple of degrees often cures a marginal case.
6. Blocked condensate drain
When melt-water cannot drain away it backs up around the coil and re-freezes, and often shows first as water leaking from the indoor unit. A clogged drain line is a quick engineer fix but rarely a DIY one.
How to thaw a frozen air conditioner safely
Never chip, scrape or run the unit hard to "melt" the ice — you risk bending the fins or damaging the compressor. Let it defrost gently.
