Noisy Air Conditioning or a Unit That Trips the Electrics
Rattles, buzzes, grinding and gurgles each point somewhere specific — and a unit that trips a breaker is telling you something electrical has gone wrong. How to read the noise, why units trip, what is safe to do yourself (not much), and what each fix costs.
What each noise usually means
First establish where the noise comes from — indoor head, outdoor unit or pipework — and when: start-up, continuous or shut-down. That alone narrows it to one or two causes.

Outdoor fan and mounting
Over the years the rubber anti-vibration feet harden, bracket bolts loosen and the unit transmits vibration into the masonry — the low drone neighbours complain about. Debris under the fan blade causes ticking; a chipped blade causes wobble and, eventually, bearing failure, which sounds like a dry grind rising with speed. All inexpensive if caught early; a seized fan in summer cooks the compressor.
Compressor
Inverter compressors on modern Daikin, Mitsubishi Electric, Fujitsu and Panasonic units are quiet, ramping rather than switching. One that knocks or is noticeably louder than it was is wearing; one that hums and trips is electrically failing. Why a unit trips the breaker or RCD
A trip means one of four things: a component drawing too much current, current leaking to earth, a protective device that was never right for the load, or water where it should not be. Identifying which is engineer work with a meter — but the pattern helps.

What to do — and not do — before the engineer arrives
- Do switch the unit off at the remote and at the isolator if it has tripped or is wet.
- Do clean the filters and check for a loose front panel — the only "inside" you should touch.
- Do clear leaves, plant growth and stored items from around the outdoor unit.
- Don't reset a breaker more than once.
- Don't open the outdoor casing — capacitors hold a lethal charge after the power is off.
- Don't change the breaker for a bigger one. The rating protects the cable, not the unit.
