Wall-Mounted vs Ceiling Air Conditioning: Which Should You Choose?

Most domestic air conditioning in the UK is wall-mounted, most commercial air conditioning is in the ceiling, and the reasons are more practical than aesthetic. This guide compares the two on cost, what they need from the building, airflow, looks, noise and servicing, so you can see which fits your room before you ask for quotes.

When a wall-mounted unit is the right call

For the overwhelming majority of UK homes, this is the answer, and it is worth being clear about why rather than treating it as the budget option.

  • Standard ceilings. Plasterboard on joists with no void rules out a cassette in most bedrooms, living rooms and home offices.
  • Price. The same 2.5–3.5 kW of cooling is £500–£1,000 cheaper on the wall, and a back-to-back install is a one-day job.
  • Flexibility and access. Easy to swap or move later, filters clean in minutes, and a repair needs no ceiling panels dropped.

When a ceiling cassette earns its premium

A cassette's case rests on air distribution and appearance. Blowing in four directions from the middle of the ceiling, it covers a 40–60 m² open-plan space evenly, with no cold jet and no hot corner. In a room where every wall is glass, cupboards or artwork, it may be the only place a unit can go. And in an office or shop it simply looks like part of the ceiling.

It is worth the extra when:

  • the room is large, square or open-plan and a wall unit would leave dead zones;
  • there is a suspended or dropped ceiling already, or one is being built as part of an extension or loft conversion;
  • wall space is unavailable or you want the system invisible;
  • it is a commercial space where several heads will share a VRF or multi-split system.

Ceiling-suspended and ducted: the alternatives

A ceiling-suspended (under-ceiling) unit bolts to a solid ceiling with no void needed, throws air a long way and suits halls and showrooms; it is priced like a cassette and as visible as a wall unit. A ducted unit hides in a void or loft and feeds several rooms through grilles; whole-house systems run £7,000–£15,000+, see the ducted cost guide. Many family homes end up hybrid: a cassette or ducted unit downstairs and wall units upstairs on one multi-split outdoor unit.

A two-room multi-split is £2,800–£5,000 and three rooms £4,500–£7,500, with cassettes pushing towards the top of each range.
You need an accessible void of roughly 250 mm or more, which in practice usually means a suspended or dropped ceiling. Slimline cassettes fit shallower voids at a cost and capacity penalty; a standard plasterboard ceiling on shallow joists will almost always push you to a wall unit.
Wall-mounted. Filters slide out from the front and the coil is reachable from a step ladder, so an annual £75–£150 service is quick. Cassettes need the grille dropped, the pump and tray checked and the coil cleaned from below, which takes longer and needs clear floor space underneath.
