One reference table for what air conditioning costs in the UK this year: installation by system type, servicing, repair call-outs, re-gassing and running cost per hour, with regional and room-by-room bands. Every figure is an indicative range compiled from installer quote data, manufacturer guidance and the Ofgem price cap, reviewed quarterly. Built to be checked against your quotes, and to be cited.
How this index is compiled
The index brings together three inputs and expresses every result as a range, never a single price. It is a reference for budgeting and quote-checking, not a tariff.
- Installer quote data. Indicative supplied-and-installed ranges for domestic and commercial work across the UK, weighted toward the South of England. We publish the range that brackets the majority of quotes, not outliers.
- Manufacturer guidance. Published capacities, power draw and seasonal efficiency (SEER/SCOP) figures for current R32 inverter units from the main brands sold in the UK, used to derive running-cost figures.
- Ofgem price cap. Running costs use the July 2026 price cap — roughly 26p/kWh for electricity, £1,663 a year for a typical dual-fuel household. Your tariff may differ.
- Quarterly review. The edition shown on this page is Q3 2026. Ranges are revised when the price cap changes or when quote data moves outside the published band.
- Scope. Work by vetted, F-Gas certified engineers; prices include VAT where it applies (see the VAT note below). Portable units are excluded from the install index because they are not installed.

Regional variation against the UK range
Equipment costs the same everywhere; labour rates and summer demand do not. The bands below are indicative adjustments to apply to the UK ranges above. They are guidance from quote patterns, not a published price list — individual installers in any region can sit outside them.

Indicative installed cost by room type
Most homes cool one to three rooms. Room type decides the capacity needed and how awkward the install is, which is why two single-split quotes can differ by £1,000. All figures below sit within the single-split range unless stated.

Running cost per hour at ~26p/kWh
Units are rated by cooling output, but draw far less electricity than that because a heat pump moves heat rather than generating it. Figures use the July 2026 Ofgem price cap (~26p/kWh) and typical inverter power draw at moderate load.

Electricity at ~26p/kWh (Ofgem cap, July 2026; £1,663/yr typical dual fuel). Inverter units modulate once the room is at temperature, so real-world averages often sit below these figures. How to use this index
- Find your row. Start with the system type in the headline index, then adjust with the room and regional tables. A Surrey bedroom install, for example, starts from £1,500–£2,800 and the South East band nudges it toward the upper half.
- Check a quote against the range. A quote inside the range is normal. Below it, ask what is missing — vacuum and pressure test, electrical certification, warranty registration, waste removal. Above it, ask what is driving it — brand tier, pipe-run length, access, scaffolding. Our quote comparison guide lists what should be itemised.
- Budget whole-life, not just install. Add a £75–£150 annual service and the per-hour running figure for your expected use. A well-serviced unit keeps its rated efficiency and its warranty.

What moves prices in 2026
- Refrigerant and F-Gas quota. R32 is the standard refrigerant in new domestic units. The UK F-Gas regime phases down the quota of higher-GWP refrigerants over time, which tends to push up the cost of servicing and re-gassing older R410A systems rather than new installs. Engineers must be F-Gas certified to handle refrigerant at all — a legal requirement, not a badge.
- Labour. Installation is skilled, certified labour and accounts for roughly a third to a half of a single-split price. Labour rates are the main reason regional bands differ; equipment prices are broadly national.
- Lead times in heatwaves. Demand spikes in hot spells and installers book out for weeks; some quote a premium for urgent work and emergency repair call-outs rise to £120–£250. Booking in spring or autumn commonly secures better availability and, sometimes, keener pricing.
- VAT. The 0% VAT rate on energy-saving materials runs to 31 March 2027 and can apply to permanently fixed air-to-air heat pumps — most fixed split units — per HMRC Notice 708/6, which applies it "depending on the facts". Cooling-only, portable and commercial installs are excluded. Ask the installer how your quote treats VAT and do not assume.
- Grants. The £7,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme is for air-to-water heat pumps only. A narrow £2,500 air-to-air route from 28 April 2026 applies solely to homes replacing direct electric heating through MCS-certified installers; standard comfort-cooling installs in gas- or oil-heated homes do not qualify.
