Here is what a cassette costs supplied and installed in 2026, what the ceiling needs to look like for one to be possible, and when a wall-mounted unit is the cheaper, better answer.
Ceiling cassette installation costs in 2026
Prices below are for a single cassette supplied, installed and commissioned by an F-Gas certified engineer, including the outdoor unit, pipework, condensate pump and a standard wall or ground bracket. VAT is included.

The per-unit figure of £2,000–£4,000 is higher than a wall unit of the same capacity because the cassette costs more, it needs a condensate lift pump, and the installer spends longer in the ceiling void. What the ceiling needs before a cassette is possible
The biggest factor is what is above the ceiling. Engineers ask about three things before they quote.
A void of roughly 250 mm or more
A standard cassette chassis is around 250–300 mm deep and needs a little clearance above for the drain hose and pipe bends. Suspended grid ceilings usually have this; plasterboard fixed directly to joists usually does not. Slimline cassettes exist for shallower voids but give up capacity and cost more per kilowatt.
A route for pipes and condensate
Refrigerant pipes, a cable and a condensate line must run from the cassette to an outside wall; in a domestic ceiling that may mean lifting floorboards above. The built-in pump lifts condensate up to roughly 750 mm, after which the drain needs a gentle fall to outside.
Structural support
A cassette hangs from threaded rods fixed to joists or the slab, never to the ceiling tiles; awkward structure means access panels and more time. Rooms and buildings that suit a ceiling cassette
Offices and meeting rooms, where four-way airflow covers a 30–60 m² space without blowing on anyone's desk and grid ceilings make fitting simple; see commercial installation. Kitchen-diners and open-plan rooms with bifolds and a cooking heat load, which are hard to cool from one wall. Loft conversions and garden rooms with an eaves or service void and no free wall. Retail units, salons, surgeries, restaurants and gyms are the other common homes for cassettes, usually several on a VRF or multi-split system: invisible, even air distribution, no wall space sacrificed.
What a cassette costs to run
A cassette uses the same inverter heat-pump technology as a wall unit, so running costs follow capacity and hours, not shape. At roughly 26p per kWh in 2026, a 2.5 kW unit drawing 0.7–0.9 kW costs around 18–23p per hour flat out and much less on a thermostat; a 5 kW office cassette draws roughly double.
