Portable vs Fitted Air Conditioning UK: An Honest Comparison

A portable air conditioner is a few hundred pounds and plugs into the wall today; a fitted split costs £1,500–£3,000 and needs an engineer. One of them is a much better product, but that does not automatically make it the right purchase. This guide compares purchase price, running cost, cooling performance, noise and heating so you can decide with your eyes open.

Why the same kilowatts feel so different

The single-hose problem

A portable is a complete refrigeration circuit in one box: it pumps heat into a stream of air and blows it out through the window hose. Every cubic metre pushed out is replaced by warm outside air pulled in through door gaps, trickle vents and the gap round the hose itself. Add the heat of the compressor and the hot hose inside the room and a good share of the rated cooling is cancelled out. Dual-hose models reduce this; most sold in the UK are single-hose.

The split advantage

A fitted split puts the compressor and heat-rejecting coil outside. The indoor unit is a quiet fan and a cold coil, the window stays shut, and the rated capacity is what you get. That is why a 2.5 kW split can hold a bedroom at 20°C on a 32°C day while a portable of the same nominal rating works flat out to get a few degrees below outside.

Running cost in practice

The per-hour figures look close, but a fitted inverter throttles down once the room is at temperature and may average well under half its maximum draw, while a portable runs flat out because it never catches up. Noise, heat in winter and everyday use

Noise. A portable has its compressor beside you, comparable to a dishwasher or louder; in a bedroom most people end up choosing between being hot and being kept awake. A fitted indoor unit on low fan is quieter than a fridge, which is why fitted units are the practical choice for bedrooms and home offices.

Heating. This is where the comparison stops being close. A fitted split is an air-to-air heat pump: at a SCOP of 3.5–4+, a kilowatt-hour of electricity gives three and a half to four of heat, far cheaper than electric panel heaters. Which one should you buy?

Choose portable if you rent, need relief for a fortnight or two a year, can live with the noise, or want to test whether you would use cooling before committing. One honest caveat: a portable is not a waste of money if it gets you through a heatwave and you never buy anything else. A portable draws around 1 kW for a fraction of the cooling a fitted unit delivers per kilowatt-hour, it is loud because the compressor is in the room, and it cannot heat efficiently. The purchase gap is the whole story only if you need cooling for a couple of weeks a year.

A fitted split is an air-to-air heat pump with a SCOP of 3.5–4+, so it gives three and a half to four times as much heat per kilowatt-hour. Portable units need nothing. A fitted wall unit's outdoor condenser is usually permitted development in England within siting and size conditions, but conservation areas, listed buildings and flats often need consent or a freeholder's agreement. Your installer should confirm the position before quoting.
