How this calculator works

A multi-split saves money against separate splits because one outdoor condenser serves every head — you pay for one compressor, one set of external brackets and one wall penetration rather than several. The saving grows with each room. In practice the crossover is around the third room: for two rooms a pair of standalone splits can work out level or even a little cheaper, but by three or four heads a single condenser is usually the more economical route and keeps the outside wall far tidier.

What it costs you is flexibility. On a standard domestic multi-split the heads share a mode, so everything is either cooling or heating. Independent room-by-room control means VRF, which is a different price bracket entirely. Our split vs multi-split vs ducted guide walks through the trade-offs.

Is a multi-split cheaper than separate splits?+

Beyond two rooms, usually yes — one condenser serves them all, so you save the cost of extra outdoor units and external penetrations. Pipe runs get longer, which offsets part of it.

Can each room be a different temperature?+

Yes, each head has its own setpoint. What they cannot do on a standard multi-split is run different modes — all heads cool, or all heads heat. Mixed modes need VRF.

How many heads can one condenser run?+

Domestic multi-splits typically take two to five. Beyond that, or across floors with long runs, expect a proposal for VRF or a second condenser.

Can I add a room later?+

Only if the condenser was specified with spare capacity and a port. Adding a head to a fully loaded condenser means replacing it, so say up front if you might extend.

How much does a multi-split cost in 2026?+

Typically £2,800–£5,000 for two rooms and £4,500–£7,500 for three, supplied and fitted. Four rooms runs roughly £6,000–£8,500, and each additional head adds £700–£1,500 for the unit, pipework and commissioning.

Can I mix wall, floor and ceiling units on one multi-split?+

Yes, and it is one of the real advantages. A single condenser can feed a wall unit in a bedroom, a floor-standing unit under a window and a recessed ceiling cassette in an open-plan room, as long as the combined capacity stays within the condenser's rating. The different indoor styles cost a little more than plain wall heads, but they let you match each room rather than compromise on the look. Tell the installer what you want in each room at the survey so the condenser is sized for the mix.
