How this calculator works
This calculator combines your system type with realistic 2026 UK supply-and-fit pricing, then applies a regional labour multiplier. Low and high reflect a ±15% spread around the mid estimate; a real quote follows a site survey.
System prices (supply + fit)
- 1 room — single split ~£2,000 (2.5–3.5kW wall unit)
- 1 large / open-plan room ~£2,800 (5kW unit)
- 2–3 rooms — multi-split ~£5,000 (one outdoor unit)
- 4+ rooms — multi-split ~£7,000
- Whole home — ducted / VRF ~£12,000
Includes indoor unit(s), outdoor condenser, standard pipe run and commissioning by an F-Gas certified engineer.
Regional multipliers
- London 1.25× · South East incl. Surrey 1.12×
- Midlands & East 1.00× (baseline)
- South West & Wales 0.95×
- North & Scotland 0.90×
Surrey sits in the South East band. Use the specific calculators below for a tighter estimate on a single split, multi-split or ducted system.
What changes an air conditioning quote
The unit and system type set the baseline, but the on-site work is where two quotes for the same rooms diverge. The biggest swing factors are the pipe-run length between each indoor head and the outdoor condenser, whether that condenser sits at ground level or needs a first-floor bracket or roof mount, brick versus stud-wall penetrations, and any consumer-unit or dedicated-circuit electrical work. A short, tidy run to a nearby ground-level condenser sits at the low end of each cost band; a long concealed run that needs scaffolding pushes you toward the high end.
Running cost matters as much as the fitted price. A modern A+++ split runs as an air-to-air heat pump with a seasonal efficiency far above a plug-in cooler, so sizing the unit correctly to the room avoids paying to run capacity you never use. Our kW / BTU sizing calculator gives you a starting size, and the running costs guide covers typical pence-per-hour figures. If you also want efficient winter heating from the same system, compare air conditioning against a heat pump.
Any install that adds, tops up or moves refrigerant must legally be carried out by an F-Gas certified engineer in the UK — it is a legal requirement, not a preference, and using an uncertified fitter can void your warranty. Every engineer we match you with is vetted and F-Gas certified (you can check any company on the REFCOM register). Check whether your external unit falls under permitted development or needs planning permission before work begins. R32 is now standard on new domestic splits; if you are replacing an ageing R410A system, expect a full unit swap rather than a top-up, because the older refrigerant is increasingly scarce and expensive.
Typical home air conditioning costs (2026)
Supply and fit by an F-Gas certified engineer, Midlands baseline with a ±15% band. These are the figures that power the calculator above.
| System | Cost range | Typical spec |
|---|---|---|
| Single split — 1 room | £1,700–£2,300 | 2.5–3.5kW wall unit |
| Large / open-plan room | £2,380–£3,220 | 5kW unit |
| Multi-split — 2–3 rooms | £4,250–£5,750 | 1 outdoor + 2–3 heads |
| Multi-split — 4+ rooms | £5,950–£8,050 | Larger multi-split |
| Ducted / VRF — whole home | £10,200–£13,800 | Concealed ducted system |

Sources & methodology
- Supply-and-fit price ranges compiled from UK installer quote data gathered during 2026 across single-split, multi-split and ducted projects.
- Regional labour multipliers derived from the same quote set, indexed to a Midlands & East baseline.
- Electricity price context from the Ofgem price cap, July 2026 (~26p/kWh electricity).
- Figures are indicative supply-and-fit prices including VAT, not quotations. Your price depends on survey.
