Orangery air conditioning: what it costs to cool one in the UK
An orangery is lovely for about nine months of the year. Then the sun hits that lantern roof and it turns into a greenhouse. Here's what air conditioning an orangery actually costs in 2026, how big a unit you need, and how to fit one without ruining the look.
The short answer
Cooling a typical UK orangery costs roughly £1,800–£3,300 for a single wall-mounted split, and up to £4,800 for a larger space or a discreet ceiling cassette. Orangeries need a touch more cooling capacity than an ordinary room the same size because of the glazed lantern and tall glazing, so most sit around a 3.5–5.0kW unit. Why an orangery needs a bit more than the floor area suggests
The difference between an orangery and an ordinary room is all that glass, and in particular the lantern roof. Glazing overhead lets in far more solar heat than a wall window does, because in summer the sun is high. A brick-piered orangery holds heat better than an all-glass conservatory once the sun's gone, but on a hot afternoon it still gains heat faster than the fabric can shed it.
So sizing off floor area alone under-cools the room. As a rough rule we'd add somewhere between a fifth and a third to the capacity you'd pick for a solid-walled room the same size, then let the surveyor firm it up. A 20m² lounge might be fine on 3.5kW; the same-sized orangery is usually happier on 5kW. Get this wrong on the low side and the unit runs flat out on the hottest days and never quite wins - which is exactly when you wanted it.

Fitting a unit without spoiling the room
Most people worry the box on the wall will undo the point of a nice orangery. Fair enough. There are a few ways round it. A slim wall-mounted split, sited high on a solid pier rather than a glazed run, is the cheapest and disappears more than you'd think. If you want it properly out of the way, a ceiling cassette recessed into a flat perimeter ceiling section, or a concealed ducted unit feeding a couple of grilles, hides almost completely - you pay a few hundred pounds more for the kit and the extra labour.
The outdoor condenser is the other half of the job. It needs airflow and a sensible pipe run back to the indoor unit, so where it can go affects both the price and how tidy the finish is. It heats in winter, and it's cheaper to run than you'd guess
An air-to-air unit is a heat pump - flip it over and it warms the orangery in the shoulder months, often for less than plug-in electric heaters because it moves heat rather than making it. That matters in an orangery, which tends to be the coldest room in the house come November.
Running costs in summer are modest. At around 26–27p per unit of electricity (the price cap for October to December 2026 works out at 26.32p/kWh, with VAT lifted off electricity until March 2027), a 3.5kW unit cooling an orangery draws maybe 0.6–0.9kW once it's up to temperature, so you're looking at roughly 16–24p an hour of actual running - and inverter units throttle right back rather than running flat out. Two rules worth knowing. First, installation is a job for an F-Gas certified engineer - that's a legal requirement in the UK for anyone handling refrigerant, not a nice-to-have, so it's the first thing to check on any quote. Second, a fixed air-to-air install in a home usually qualifies for 0% VAT until 31 March 2027 under the energy-saving materials relief; portable and cooling-only kit doesn't. Planning permission is rarely needed for a domestic unit, but siting near a boundary or on a listed or conservation-area property can change that - check before you commit.
