Air conditioning in Sussex: what the county asks for
Sussex — East and West together — runs from the Surrey border at Crawley and East Grinstead to the Channel coast, and the work changes with the geography. The northern belt around Gatwick is commuter and commercial territory: Crawley's post-war neighbourhoods and the Manor Royal business district, Horsham, East Grinstead, Haywards Heath and Burgess Hill, with a heavy concentration of hotels, offices and logistics units around the airport. The coast is different. Planning notes for Sussex installations
For most Sussex houses a wall-mounted unit is permitted development within the siting and size conditions. Brighton and Hove is the main exception: numerous conservation areas cover most of the centre and seafront, and the city has a large stock of listed buildings, so a visible outdoor unit frequently needs consent and flats need the freeholder's agreement as well. Chichester, Lewes, Arundel, Rye, Midhurst and Petworth have extensive historic cores with the same considerations, and listed buildings anywhere always need listed building consent.
The South Downs National Park runs the length of the county behind the coast, and the High Weald National Landscape covers much of the north-east around East Grinstead, Crowborough and Wadhurst; in the National Park the authority, not the district council, decides planning matters. Crawley's neighbourhoods and the newer estates at Horsham and Burgess Hill are generally unconstrained, though some carry covenants on external alterations.
