Planning notes for Berkshire installations
For most Berkshire houses a wall-mounted unit is permitted development within the siting and size conditions. The county's best-known exception is Windsor and Eton, where the conservation area and concentration of listed buildings mean any outdoor unit visible from the street needs consideration. Ascot, Sunninghill, Maidenhead's older core, Reading's Victorian conservation areas and riverside villages such as Cookham, Bray, Sonning and Pangbourne are also designated, and listed buildings anywhere always need listed building consent.
Riverside homes along the Thames — Windsor, Datchet, Wraysbury, Maidenhead and Caversham — are often in flood risk areas, so engineers site the outdoor unit above likely flood levels or on a wall bracket rather than a ground slab. Flats in Reading, Bracknell and Slough town centres need the freeholder or managing agent's permission, and several new estates carry covenants on external alterations.
