Valley and Hill
Caterham splits neatly in two. Caterham Valley, around the station and Croydon Road, is the Victorian commercial heart — terraces, flats over shops and the Church Walk precinct — in a dry chalk valley that holds still, warm air on summer afternoons. Caterham-on-the-Hill is older and higher: the High Street, 1930s semis on Buxton Lane and Queens Park, and the Village, the late-1990s redevelopment of the Guards Depot with its converted barrack blocks. Chaldon, Woldingham and Whyteleafe add large detached houses on the Downs. Home offices and south-facing bedrooms are the usual first rooms cooled, and the well-insulated Village homes in particular hold heat in July.
